Jan. 29, 2013 Meeting
well, despite our small numbers, we had a fabulous time at book club tonight, hosted by helene. as always, great food and conversation about the books.
it's funny that, while we all thought the books were decent, not great, they still generated quite a bit of dialogue among us, trying to parse out why the various characters did what they did, and on a broader level, determining the stories' historical and humanitarian meaning.
we voted 2 stars to washington square and 3 to sense of an ending.
We had English food. Lyn made bangers and mash; Helene made pot roast; Lonnie cooked broccoli almandine; Lu made green salad and roasted parsnips and carrots; and Carol made toffee. For pupus, Carol cooked these sinfully delicious chicken pieces wrapped in bacon with brown sugar and chili powder. Lonnie made shrimping egg salad in lettuce leaves. Carol: sorry that I forgot to get a photo of you and your toffee.
our next two books are arcadia by lauren groff and flight behavior by barbara kingsolver. many of us wanted to read wolf hall, but it's a very lengthy book, and probably should not be joined by another book. perhaps next time we take that one on.
nancy has graciously offered to host on march 2.
