Social Distancing EBBC Style
While the pandemic kept us apart for our previous book club meeting, we were excited to gather on June 6 in Kathy’s lovely backyard (social distancing, of course). We were a little nervous about the weather, but in the end it was a beautiful evening.
Lonnie cleverly brought appetizers of grapes and cheese, bagged individually for each of us. Dinner included delicious pizza from Little Star, Nancy’s yummy fruit drinks and Carol’s chocolate chip cookies and chocolate-dipped strawberries. We tried a bottle of Domaine Curry as well.
Book One – One Day: The Extraordinary Story of an Ordinary 24 Hours in America: Most of us really liked the writing style and felt it was an Interesting premise (The writers randomly selected a day to write about and it turned out to be Sunday, December 28, 1986.) Some of us thought it got off to a slow start, but piqued our interest the more we read. Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
Book Two – Just Mercy: With everything going on in the world and, especially here in the U.S., Just Mercy was a timely choice. The conditions that people of color face in prison and in dealing with the police are heartbreaking. Bryan Stevenson’s dedication to helping the wrongly imprisoned and to improving conditions was a well-written, but sobering story of his life and those he’s helped. Rating: 4.5 stars. (out of 5)
