Zoom-Booking!
Forced into a Zoom meeting, with wine and in some cases food in hand, it was actually a great, fun and informative meeting! Carol is to be scorned for eating one of her new creations in front of us, without the demanded home delivery, but we all have our weaknesses.
Malcolm Gladwell’s “Talking To Strangers” got a solid 3 as our group rating. We appreciated some fresh, out-of-the-box thinking about how we perceive people and what we really know about folks, even when we are certain. Some of us felt the writing was scattered and choppy, but there were interesting insights revisiting Amanda Knox, Brock Turner, the Cuba spy, Sandra Bland. So an interesting read, but did we really learn anything new, and did he succeed (not) in pulling it together?
Giver of Stars got a solid 4 from everyone who read it. We liked the characters, the writing, the story. We liked Alice's growing strength and development. The historical truth of women coming together to make a difference, doing it because it is the right thing to do in the face of criticism (not for the credit they never get anyway), and the story of women bonding together to make a difference was a triumph.
Though the story was somewhat predictable, we were entertained and were eager to keep reading.
