Unsheltered is how it always is...?

We rated “Unsheltered" a 4, because of some highs and some lows. Some of us liked it way more than others. Those that gave it higher ratings found Kingsolver’s prose to be poetic and unusual and that her dual story was engaging. Those that gave it a lower rating thought it was too verbose, suffered from not enough editing and found many of her characters uninteresting. Our other book, "This is How it Always Is", we gave a rating of 3. Most of us found it an interesting exploration of a family forced to deal with a gender nonconforming child. I believe we all thought Frankel is a decent writer, but some of us found the acceptance of the youngest child by the siblings and neighbors unrealistic and not a good reflection of the cruelty of many children. We had a good discussion taking off from both books, and we enjoyed southern food that was to die for, mostly at the hands of Lonnie.

Our next gathering will be at Hilarie's on September 28th.

We are reading: A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell and Educated by Tara Westover.

The next book picker is Carol

We started off with a little sparkling wine!

And finished off with a scrumptious cake!
