we had a lovely time at nancy's last night, with some yummy asian-inspired food. and maggie gamely filled in for carol with some chocolate-covered strawberries and blondie brownies. so tasty.
we had a good discussion about the books. we all appreciated the amazing story of brain on fire...the rarity of the disease and the stroke of luck that she found doctors willing to figure out what was going on. it was a quick and easy read, though some felt the writing was a bit lacking while others thought it was done well. in the end, it got a 3.
reviews were mixed on hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet. while most were intrigued by the historical perspective the novel provided, some felt the overlaying plot was a bit schmaltzy. others thought this structure worked well. also a quick and easy read. in the end, it got a 2
.in a near unanimous vote, "goldfinch" was selected as next book. it's quite long, so no second book was assigned. thanks lu for the selection.nancy will pick books for our next meeting on june 7 and lu will host.
