March 15, 2014 Meeting

What a great night we had tonight! Although we missed half of the group, those in attendance all agreed that even at half strength, this group rocks!

We enjoyed a healthy dinner of roast chicken, kale salad, glazed carrots, quinoa salad and no-knead bread! Very delicious! Our sins returned with an amazing carrot-cheese cake. Really, you can only expect so much virtue!

We discussed Going Clear at length. We were all amazed at the audacity of L. Ron Hubbard. How could someone so insane create such a "religion" and amass such a devoted following? How could seemingly intelligent people fall for this cult? How could people give up their own self worth to the degree that they accepted licking a bathroom floor as reasonable punishment? It is all beyond our comprehension. While the story was compelling, we all agreed that the writing was choppy and hard to follow at times. Amazing that the author writes for the New Yorker! Many found it hard to stick to it for very long and not everyone made it to the end of the book. Ratings ranged from a 1 to 4, but averaged out at 3. That score was based more on the subject matter than the writing.

Only one reader finished Flamethrowers. We entertained the idea of carrying it over to our next meeting, but ultimately passed.

Books selected for our next meeting are: Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan, and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

At our last meeting Nancy had agreed to host on April 26. If that is not the case Nancy, please let us know.I am glad that we had such a lovely gathering tonight.

I am blessed to have you all in my life.
