April 13, 2013 Meeting
thanks again to mary for hosting our meeting last night. a delicious array of food items were presented, including a "gourmet" tuna noodle casserole, a shepards pie, and roasted brussel sprouts, plus grilled-on-the-spot shrimp and crab dip appetizers. and for dessert a chocolate meringue topped with whip cream, chocolate and strawberries. yum!
we also had two special guests...mary's husband mario and my daughter rachell, which was nice. the opinions on light between the oceans were pretty similar...everyone really liked it. we enjoyed the writers keen ability to place the reader in the time period and situation with well turned phrases and clever descriptions. even the side characters were well defined and interesting, we noted. some had a bit of trouble with the neat-and-tidy ending, but overall the book was an enjoyable and easy read. we gave it 4 stars.
unfortunately, wolf hall lacked the same enthusiasm from club members. since this was such a fascinating time period, full of drama and intrigue, we all really wanted to get into this book, however we mostly agreed that the writing style used by the author made it very difficult to follow the story, with most of our mental energy being used to just track the numerous characters and the convoluted plot line, instead of getting immersed in the rich history of that era. 2 stars only. our next books are: gone girl by gillian flynn and wife 22 by melanie gideon.
lu will host on may 25. kathy will host on july 6.
